Chemical Peel in Accra: Types, What to Expect and Aftercare

By Dr Kathryn Limo, Healthy Skin and Hair Services, Accra

"Will a chemical peel burn my skin?" "Will it make my dark spots worse?" These are the two questions I hear most often from clients in Accra who are thinking about a peel. They are good questions, because on melanin-rich skin, the type of peel and how it is done matter a great deal.

This guide explains what a chemical peel is, the peels we offer at our Accra med spa, what to expect on the day, and how to look after your skin afterwards.

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a professional treatment that applies a carefully chosen acid solution to the skin. It loosens the bonds between dull, damaged surface cells so they shed, revealing fresher-looking skin underneath. Depending on the type, a peel can help with acne, dark spots, uneven texture, enlarged-looking pores and dullness.

Professional peels are different from the exfoliating products you use at home. They are stronger, they are chosen for your skin after an assessment, and they are applied and timed at our med spa. Every peel we offer is doctor-led. That is why they should never be copied at home with products bought online.

Are chemical peels suitable for dark skin?

They can be, when the right peel is chosen and the skin is prepared properly. Melanin-rich skin is more likely to develop dark marks after irritation or inflammation. A peel that is too strong, or done without preparation and aftercare, can leave the skin darker rather than clearer.

This is why every peel at our med spa starts with a consultation. We look at your skin type, your concerns, your current products and any history of reactions before recommending a peel, or telling you honestly that a peel is not the right option for you yet.

The chemical peels we offer in Accra

Salicylic peel

Salicylic acid works in oil, so it can reach inside pores. This versatile peel is designed for oily and acne-prone skin, congested-looking pores, uneven texture and post-acne marks, usually with little visible peeling. It is performed by our trained aesthetician, following my clinical protocol. Book a Salicylic Peel.

Glycolic peel

Glycolic acid is a well-established AHA that works on the surface of the skin to help improve dullness, uneven texture and the appearance of dark spots. Most people do not see dramatic peeling; instead, the skin sheds gradually over the following days as you cleanse. I perform this peel myself. Book a Glycolic Peel.

Melanostop depigmenting peel

This professional peel is designed for stubborn discolouration, including melasma, sun-related dark patches and uneven skin tone. It works to help regulate excess pigment in problem areas and gradually fade the appearance of discolouration, not to lighten your natural skin tone. Melasma in particular needs a proper assessment first, because it behaves differently from post-acne marks. I perform this peel myself. Book a Melanostop Peel.

Looking for help with acne scars or large pores?

Deep, narrow acne scars and enlarged pores often need a more targeted approach than a full-face peel. Read about our doctor-performed TCA CROSS treatment.

How much does a chemical peel cost in Accra?

Treatment Price
Salicylic Peel GH₵600
Glycolic Peel GH₵600
Melanostop Depigmenting Peel GH₵1,000

Prices are per session at the time of writing. The number of sessions you need depends on your skin and your goals, and we discuss this with you at your consultation.

What happens on the day?

  1. Consultation: we assess your skin and confirm the peel is suitable for you.
  2. Cleansing: your skin is thoroughly cleansed and prepared.
  3. The peel: the solution is applied and carefully timed. Most people feel tingling or warmth, which settles.
  4. Neutralising and soothing: the peel is removed or neutralised and the skin is calmed.
  5. Aftercare advice: you leave with clear instructions for the days ahead.

Aftercare: the part that protects your results

  • Use sun protection every day. This is the most important step, especially on melanin-rich skin.
  • Do not pick or peel flaking skin. Let it shed naturally.
  • Pause retinol, scrubs and other strong actives until we tell you it is safe to restart.
  • Keep your routine gentle and simple for the first few days.
  • Contact us if you notice anything that worries you.

Who should wait before having a peel?

A peel may not be suitable right now if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin infection, open wounds, sunburn, or a recent reaction to skincare products, or if you are taking certain acne medicines. Tell us about your health and medications at your consultation so we can advise you safely.

Preparing your skin at home

A consistent, gentle routine before and between sessions helps. Our Clarifying Cleanser with 2% salicylic acid helps keep pores clear, and the Dark Spot Kit supports skin that is prone to marks. We will tell you which products to pause before your peel.
